17 Apr A Doctor’s Guide to French Pharmacy Skincare Guide
French pharmacy skincare has earned its cult following for good reason. Many of the brands are rooted in pharmacy, dermatology, or thermal spa heritage, and the category continues to stand out for sensitive-skin formulations, wearable sunscreens, gentle cleansers, and affordable treatment products.
I recently travelled to Paris and Nice for the AMWC conference in Monaco. Whenever I am in Paris, I always make time to visit French pharmacies and parapharmacies. It is one of my favourite ways to feel the pulse of the French beauty industry. For readers who love skincare, travelling to France offers access to a broader world of French pharmacy skincare with wider product assortments, easier access to cult formulas, and often better value than what you may find in your home market. Citypharma, Pharmacie Monge, and the Grande Pharmacie du Forum des Halles all position themselves around broad selection and pharmacy-plus-parapharmacy shopping, and beauty connoisseurs continue to seek them out.

I highly recommend seekin her out if you’re in Paris shopping at the pharmacy. She speak fluent English and is so patient and ready to share without being pushy.

But first, some background about French pharmacy skincare.

Why French Pharmacy Skincare Is So Popular?
French beauty has long been associated with minimalist, easy to use skincare routines. The emphasis is usually on healthy-looking skin rather than obvious correction. Hence, French beauty products tend to focus on consistent basics that improve skin quality, as opposed to chasing trends and heavy camouflage. Many French pharmacy skincare brands focus on skin barrier support, tolerance, hydration, sun protection, and targeted correction for common concerns such as acne, sensitivity, pigmentation, redness, and dehydration. That’s why in an industry dominated by fast, micro trends, French pharmacy skincare remains reliable, effective, and affordable.

Why Tourists Should at Shop French Pharmacies in France
In Singapore, we have easy access to French pharmacy skincare brands like La Roche-Posay, Avène, Bioderma, SVR, Vichy, Caudalie, Nuxe, or Embryolisse. Nonetheless, the product ranges of these home grown brands are markedly broader with pharmacy exclusive lines in France, and you can get tax refund on your purchases!
Are French Pharmacy Skincare Products Safe? A Doctor Explains EU Skincare Regulations
One reason many consumers trust French pharmacy skincare is that the products sit within the broader European Union cosmetics regulatory framework.
Cosmetic products sold in the EU are subject to a structured regulatory system for safety and accountability. This includes ingredient rules, safety assessment requirements, product information files, central notification, and manufacturing standards.

As a doctor that focuses on skin longevity, these regulations matter because reactions from skincare can result in inflammation and barrier health. This does not mean that French skincare will suit everyone. Afterall, a well-regulated product can still cause allergies or trigger conditions like eczema and acne. However, having strong regulatory oversight does help with the consistency, traceability, and formulation standards of French skincare products.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+
This is one of the classic French pharmacy barrier creams. According to Yveline, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ is one of the top sellers in her pharmacy. I often recommend cica or centella asiatica containing skincare like this for patients whose skin is irritated or dry from travel or overuse of active ingredients. The texture is thick, so I’d caution against using this daily if you have oily or congestion-prone skin.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ contains Panthenol (Vitamin B5) for hydration, Madecassoside (a compound from Centella Asiatica) that calms irritation and Tribioma, a unique prebiotic complex that rebalances the skin’s microbiome.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is another well loved French barrier cream, known for its simplicity and affordability. It contains shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera and soy proteins for moisture retention and fortification of the skin barrier.
The Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré spreads like a thick cream, and some people like using this as a primer style base. I’d also caution against using this if you have oily, acne-prone skin.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O
Another iconic French pharmacy skincare product is Bioderma Sensibio H2O. This micellar water is simple, gentle and easy to use, which explains why it remains so popular. I’m a fan of micellar water as part of double cleansing routines and I’d recommend the Bioderma Sensibio H2O for gentle makeup removal as part of your double cleansing routine. However, if you wear waterproof makeup or water resistant sunscreen, I’d recommend using a more thorough cleanser.

A313 Vitamin A Pommade
A313 Vitamin A Pommade
Another French pharmacy staple is A313 Vitamin A Pommade. This “retinol” cream has gone viral on TikTok but I’m honestly unimpressed by A313 Vitamin A Pommade. Essentially, the A313 Vitamin A Pommade contains a mix of retinoids: retinyl acetate, retinyl propionate, retinyl palmitate. These retinoids still need to undergo 3 conversion steps in the skin to become retinoic acid, so the effective concentration is likely to be way lower than its stated concentration of 200,000 IU of synthetic Vitamin A mixture per 100g or, 0.06%. If you’re expecting the benefits of retinol like brighter, smoother skin from A313 Vitamin A Pommade, you might be very disappointed or have to be extremely patient.

Caudalie Vinopure Blemish Control Salicylic Serum
Caudalie Vinopure Blemish Control Salicylic Serum
Caudalie is another home grown French beauty brand that’s also a staple in French pharmacies. The brand is synonymous with clean beauty and the use of botanical ingredients from Bordeaux. Yveline pointed out to me the top sellers from Caudalie in her pharmacy, and perhaps the one that’s worth mentioning in my opinion is Caudalie Vinopure Blemish Control Salicylic Serum. Honestly, some of Caudalie’s skincare products have been misses for me, but I found Caudalie Vinopure Blemish Control Salicylic Serum to reduce blemishes and congestion for my skin. The Caudalie Vinopure Blemish Control Salicylic Serum contains salicylic acid, an oil-soluble exfoliating acid that gently removes clogged

Mitosyl Protective Ointment for Diaper Change
Mitosyl Protective Ointment for Diaper Change
This is a recommendation from a friend, who swears that Mitosyl Protective Ointment for Diaper Change works well for babies, so I was tasked with hunting this diaper cream for her. The Mitosyl Protective Ointment for Diaper Change turned out to be elusive- it was sold out in 3 pharmacies before I finally found stock for it.
Mitosyl diaper cream is basically a barrier cream for nappy rash. It contains zinc oxide plus cod liver oil, with an occlusive base to shield skin from urine, stool, and friction. Note that this is not for use as a face cream.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse
Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse
Another popular item from the French pharmacies is the NUXE Huile Prodigieuse, a multi-purpose dry oil for the face, body, and hair. The NUXE Huile Prodigieuse is a blend of botanical oils like tsubaki, argan and macadamia. From a doctor’s perspective, this oil can be used as a nourishing cosmetic oil that softens dry skin and adds slip and shine to hair lengths and ends. I would be cautious using it on the face if you are acne-prone or sensitive to fragrances.
Filorga Neocica Moisturizing Repairing Care
Filorga Neocica Moisturizing Repairing Care
Yveline also shared that Filorga Neocica Moisturizing Repairing Care is very popular in her pharmacy as aftercare from laser treatments. The Filorga Neocica Moisturizing Repairing Care cream contains a mix of soothing and recovery-support ingredients like allantoin and niacinamide and several amino acids. The ingredient list does make this cream more interesting than your usual cica cream.

French pharmacy sunscreens
French pharmacy sunscreens
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ was a unanimous standout among the pharmacists I spoke to when it came to sunscreen recommendations. This sunscreen contains advanced UV filters including Mexoryl 400, a patented ingredient from the L’oreal group, that protects against the ultra long UVA rays. This sunscreen is already available in Singapore; but what I found in France, were the tinted versions. I’ve shared about this before, tinted sunscreens specifically block visible light and blue light that aggravate hyperpigmentation and melasma. I snapped up this sunscreen, as well as La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAir Serum Sunscreen (tinted) and ISDIN Fotoprotector FusionWater Magic Light Sunscreen (tinted) while in Paris after sampling them and loving their lightweight textures. Let me know if you’d like to see my full review of these sunscreens.

For non-tinted sunscreens, SVR Sun Secure Blur SPF50 and Uriage Bariésun are popular in France. Vichy is a local skincare brand and classic French pharmacy that was discontinued in Singapore. I was glad to find one of my old favourites, Vichy Capital Soleil UV-Age Daily SPF50, a lightweight sunscreen that’s easy for daily wear.

Outside Citypharma in Saint Germain de Pres, my go to whenever I’m in Paris. Convenient location and a wide selection. Location: 26 Rue du Four, 75006 Paris, France
Best Pharmacies in France to Shop French Pharmacy Skincare
You’ll easily find pharmacies when you’re in Paris. They vary in their selections, prices and whether they offer tax refunds. The most well known pharmacies in Paris are:
• Citypharma for its wide selection and competitive prices. I usually shop at the Citypharma in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 6th Arrondissement for convenience. Saint Germain is my favourite neighbourhood to stay in whenever I’m in Paris, and the Citypharma in Saint Germain is within walking distance of my favourite cafe. It does get very crowded at Saint Germain’s Citypharma and the queues to pay can be long- you’ve been warned.
• Grande Pharmacie du Forum des Halles for an even wider selection of brands and products.
• Pharmacie Monge is now trending on Tiktok for its cheaper price. I’ve not visited, and would love to know your take if you’ve visited.
My tips for shopping in French pharmacies
1. Ask about tax refunds. Sharing from my personal experience, don’t take this for granted because not all pharmacies offer tax refunds. For purchase above €100, you can get 10-14% tax refunds at the airport.
2. Bring your passport along- you’ll need this to process tax refund documentation at the pharmacy.
3. Buy for your skin type. French pharmacies can be overwhelming and it can be tempting to overbuy (I know this firsthand). Ask a pharmacist if you need help- I’ve had very helpful experiences in Paris and Nice in general.
Doctor’s Takeaway on on French Pharmacy Skincare
If you’re in France, be sure to check out the skincare in French pharmacies. They’re safe, sensible and economical. I particularly like (and take comfort in) the strict EU regulations that cosmetic companies have to abide by and that the French take a more classic and functional approach to their skin health. French pharmacy skincare deserves its reputation and that’s why I’ll always continue to visit pharmacies whenever I’m in France. What are your favourite skincare products from France?
