Sunscreen
19 April 2024
It’s a cruel summer with Singapore’s high UV index getting worst in the recent months. Sunscreen application and reapplication is more necessary now than ever to avoid the harm of UV rays- sunburns, skin cancer and signs of ageing to say the least. If not, here’s a visual reminder from William McElligott, a 66 year old truck driver from Chicago below. In this 28 years of driving a truck, his left side of his face was exposed to the sun through the window of his lorry; however the right side of his face was shielded from of sun exposure by the lorry cab. This chronic, unequal exposure of his face to UV rays has resulted in marked asymmetry in his appearance. The left side of his face has marked dermatoheliosis (i.e. signs of ageing due to sun exposure) including ridges, comedones, and areas of nodular elastosis.

And here’s another sunscreen tip to protect your skin: Remenber to use sunscreen on your neck too! The skin of your neck is also vulnerable to UV ray damage from sun exposure. Years of unprotected sun exposure can also damage the skin, as this photo of a 92 year old lady who used sunscreen on her face, but not on her neck for more than 4oyears.

Sulwhasoo is one of Korea’s most well known brands for luxury, hanbang cosmetics. I bought this sunscreen on my recent trip to Seoul; and I’ve shared about my experiences in Best Korean Beauty Stores & Experiences in Seoul and my review of the famed Sulwhasoo spa in Review: Sulwhasoo Spa in Gangnam, Seoul. I’ve also shared about popular Korean skincare ingredients for 2024/2025 in this blogpost An Expert’s Guide to Trending Korean Skincare Ingredients and K-beauty Skincare Trends for 2024.

Finish/cast of Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up
• Light cosmetic coverage; looks dewy
• Very slight light pink colour that makes my skin look more rosy; but potential white cast for users with dark skin
Cost of Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up
Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector retails for SGD$110 for 50ml (i.e.SGD$2.20/ml). I paid ~SGD$85 for this in Seoul, Korea.
The good about Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up
• Broad spectrum sunscreen
• Very moisturising
• Premium Korean medicinal ingredients e.g. Panax ginseng root
• Refreshing fragrance (if you like the scent of Sulwhasoo’s First Care Activating Serum, you would like this fragrance)
• Finish is dewy
• Hides pores well
• Colour correction made my skin look brighter and more radiant, but fairer.
The bad about Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up
• Thick, creamy texture could be occlusive for oily skin types and in Singapore’s humid weather
• Takes a long while to dry
• Sunscreen transfers easily; I had to use a setting powder to fix the sunscreen
• Cosmetic coverage is very light, my skin looked slightly fairer. Could cause a white cast on darker skin.
• Expensive
Verdict on Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up
Overall, I like Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up as sunscreen with light cosmetic coverage. It checks all the boxes for a luxury beauty product (e.g. use of premium ingredients, dewy finish and elegant sensorial experience). However, using the Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up is troublesome because it transfers easily and dries very slowly. However, I don’t think Sulwhasoo UV Wise Brightening Multi Protector in No.2 Milky Tone Up would work for someone with oily or acne prone skin as well as users with darker skin.

Drunk Elephant is a US skincare brand founded by Tiffany Masterson in 2012. As one of the earliest proponents of “clean compatible” beauty, Drunk Elephant has always prided its products as free from so-called “suspicious six ingredients”: essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances and sodium lauryl sulfate. Masterson, then a homemaker, through her readings, identified the “suspicious six” as the root causes of her skin woes. With the help of a chemist she contacted, Masterson developed a skincare line free of her “suspicious six” ingredients.
I’ve shared my review of Drunk Elephant’s acid in Review of Face Exfoliating Acids in Skincare. In 2018, Drink Elephant was involved in a lawsuit that damaged its credibility; read about this controversy in 5 Beauty Industry Scandals & Controversies.

• Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil- also known as marula oil. This ingredient has moisturising, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
• Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract Chondrus Crispus Extract, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Sprout Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice Extract: botanical extracts with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties
• Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil and Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil: moisturise and soften the skin.
• Raspberry Seed Oil: moisturises skin
• Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: retains moisture in skin
• Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol: antioxidants

Finish/cast of Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense
• Visible white cast
• Thick and greasy
Cost of Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense
SGD $52 for 90ml i.e $0.58/ml ]
The good about Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense
• This is a mineral sunscreen that may appeal to those who do not want ot use “chemical” or organic sunscreen filters
The bad about Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense
• Essentials oils can cause allergic reactions
• Lower SPF than the other sunscreens in this review
• Amount of UVA protection is not stated •
Components separated; with white clumps! These clumps could not be blended
• Texture is more like a paste
• Visible white cast
• Greasy on skin
Verdict on Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense
Amount of protection against UVA is unclear; and SPF is relatively lower than other sunscreens I’ve used. A white cast is expected with physical or inorganic sunscreens; but I’ve used physical sunscreens with a less obvious cast. If your skin is darker than mine, you might find Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 to be grossly visible.
The separation and clumping of the sunscreen is also unacceptable; because an even film of sunscreen is needed for adequate protection. The texture and greasiness are unpleasant; and I could feel the sunscreen sliding off my skin. I would not recommend using Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense.
Moving on from the mess that is Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 to another mineral sunscreen that has a more elegant finish. Mineral sunscreens typically have a white cast and toothpaste like texture; but some mineral sunscreens have formulations that have improved the finish and texture even though the problem of white cast is still present to some extent. Case in point is AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen.
Aestura is a Korean skincare brand owned by Korean cosmetics conglomerate, AmorePacific. Founded in 1983, Aestura’s skincare range focuses on improving the skin barrier function. As I’ve shared in K-beauty Skincare Trends for 2024, skin barrier skincare is currently trending in Korea. Aestura’s proprietary ingredient, DermaON, consists of a capsule ceramide technology for improving skin barrier function. One of Aestura’s claim to fame was its AESTURA AtoBarrier365 Cream, which was featured in an episode of Korean reality dating show, Singles Inferno. Eagle- eyed viewers noticed this moisturiser at the bedside table of contestant Shin Seul Ki, instantly propelling this moisturiser to fame.

I paid approximately SGD$40 for a 40ml tube of AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen at Olive Young in Seoul i.e. $1.00/ml
The good about AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen
• Choice of ceramides, emollients and humectants in this sunscreen make it moisturising and helpful for sensitive skin types
• Moisturising and calming on the skin
• Lightweight gel
• Very slight white cast; of all the mineral sunscreens I’ve tried, the white cast is probably the least I’ve encountered with AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen
• Nice powdery finish
• Hides pores
• Did not pill
• No irritation
The bad about AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen
• Relatively pricey
• AESTURA is not available in Singapore, you’ll have to ship this in.
Verdict on AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen
AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen has the least white cast and most lightweight texture among the mineral sunscreens I’ve tried. Its powdery finish reminded me of my beloved Shiseido Anessa sunscreen (that I reviewed in Sunscreen Reviews 2019) but the texture of AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen texture is more of a gel than a milky lotion; and it is only slightly heavier on the skin after it dries. That said, I believe AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen may still cause a white cast if you have darker skin. As far as mineral sunscreens go, AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen is right up there as one of my favourites.
KAHI is another K-beauty brand that is immensely popular in Korea. One of its top sellers is its KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Multi Balm, which is popularly known as the “Kim Go Eun”, a top Korean drama actress who endorses this product. The KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Multi Balm was one of 2021 and 2022’s top selling beauty products, partly due to the untact trend that arose from Covid-19. • Gel lotion that spreads easily
• Dries quickly
• Very lightweight
• Subtle dewy finish

The bad about Review of KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Essential Suncream
• Risk of allergic contact dermatitis due to large number of plant extracts
• No cosmetic coverage, no hiding of pores or blemishes
• Does not feel moisturising or calming despite the long list of plant extracts with these benefits
Verdict on KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Essential Suncream
KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Essential Suncream is an affordable, broad spectrum sunscreen for those who desire a very light tone up sunscreen with a dewy finish. The tint or colour correction is barely visible. If you have sensitive skin or multiple allergies, this sunscreen may trigger a reaction.

The bad about Torriden DIVE-IN Watery Moisture Sun Cream

Malachite extract for blue colour seems more of a gimmick. As the last ingredient in the ingredient, its actual proportion is likely to be very low; and its antioxidant effects are probably minimal.
Verdict on Torriden DIVE-IN Watery Moisture Sun Cream
Torriden DIVE-IN Watery Moisture Sun Cream is moisturising and affordable; I would recommend this sunscreen for users with dry skin. The finish is very basic, especially compared to the KAHI sunscreen from the same manufacturer. However, the Torriden DIVE-IN Watery Moisture Sun Cream is also the most affordable sunscreen in this review.

• This sunscreen is not available in Singapore
Verdict on d’Alba Waterfull Tone-up Sunscreen
I love the finish of d’Alba Waterfull Tone-up Sunscreen; my skin was visibly more radiant and luminous! However, some of the ingredients are phototoxic and that’s a no go for me.

• Limeone in the product undergoes oxidation when exposed to air. The byproduct is highly allergenic
• Geraniol in the product also undergoes autooxidation to form byproducts that can cause contact allergies
• For a tinted sunscreen, there was no cosmetic coverage or colour correction.
• Most expensive sunscreen in this review
Verdict on Clé de Peau Beauté UV Protective Cream
My expectations were high for Clé de Peau Beauté UV Protective Cream, and I really like the dewy finish and smooth feel. However, the high cost of Clé de Peau Beauté UV Protective Cream makes it prohibitive for me to use the recommended amount of sunscreen for enough protection.
I am likely to repurchase Clé de Peau Beauté UV Protective Cream when it goes on sale. Although i did not experience any allergies or irritation with Clé de Peau Beauté UV Protective Cream, the formula contains potential irritants and allergens. If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend performing a patch test with this product first before using it.

The girl bosses behind this cult favourite sunscreen brand, Bec Jefferd and Ava Matthews spent more than 2 years developing their sunscreens for comfortable everyday use. The brand was one of the fastest growing cosmetics brand in Australia in 2020, which saw Ultra Violette expand globally. My review of its popular Queen Screen in Review: Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF 50+.

Verdict on Ultra Violette Clean Screen Sensitive Skinscreen
I’m on the fence about Ultra Violette Clean Screen Sensitive Skinscreen. On one hand, it’s mattifying and the cosmetic coverage is the greatest of all the sunscreens in this review; on the other, the SPF protection is relatively low and UVA protection is not stated. Users with darker skin may find that the tint is unsuitable for their skin colour.

Verdict on Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream
Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream was trending on TikTok in 2023, with many content creators raving about it, as if it were the best thing since sliced bread. Considering this sunscreen in isolation, without the hype on social media, the Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream felt like most other generic Korean sunscreens. Similar filters, use of herbs, lightweight feel with no white cast. This is not surprising for Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream; as this sunscreen is produced by Kolmar, a cosmetics manufacturer that also produces sunscreens for many Korean brands like Round Lab and Beauty of Joseon.

paid approximately SGD$40 for a 35ml tube of SHISEIDO Elixir Daily Brightening UV Protector in Tokyo. The same product retails for SGD$55.50 in Singapore (i.e. SGD$1.59/ml)
The good about SHISEIDO Elixir Daily Brightening UV Protector
• I loved the texture- milky lotion that reminded me of another sunscreen favourite, Shiseido Anessa (shared about it in Sunscreen Reviews 2019)
• Luminous finish on my skin, almost like a primer on its own
• Lightweight
• Did not require much blending
• No pilling
• No white cast on me, but it looks like it could be a problem for users with darker skin
The bad about SHISEIDO Elixir Daily Brightening UV Protector
• Limonene in the product undergoes oxidation when exposed to air. The byproduct is highly allergenic
• Linalool in the ingredient list can also undergo oxidation to form by products that cause contact dermatitis, even at low concentrations
• One of the key ingredients as mentioned by Elixir itself is black tea extract. Black and green teas are sources of antioxidants like catechins; however green tea is higher in these amounts than black tea. Why black tea was chosen over green tea, despite more studies supporting the use of green tea for skin rejuvenation, was not explained by Elixir.
• Relatively expensive
Verdict on SHISEIDO Elixir Daily Brightening UV Protector
I loved the finish of Elixir Daily Brightening UV Protector on my skin. However, some of the ingredients are potentially allergenic to users and this sunscreen is relatively expensive for an ingredient list that does not contain active ingredients that are strongly evidenced for any benefit to the skin.
This sunscreen mist was released by Japanese drugstore brand, Biore in 2023. I bought this in Tokyo to try; and liked it! The Bioré UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist is a lightweight watery mist that makes sunscreen reapplication easy and convenient. Sharing how it looks like on my skin in this video.

The good about Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist
• Easy and fuss free for sunscreen reapplication
• Does not interfere with makeup
• Cooling effect on the skin
• Lightweight
• Quick dry
The bad about Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist
• Difficult to estimate amount of sunscreen applied
• Film forming effect leaves a somewhat oily appearance
• Pungent floral fragrance
Verdict on Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist
I would recommend Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist for reapplying sunscreen rather than as the main mode of UV protection. Assessing the amount sprayed; and whether this forms an even layer on the skin is extremely difficult with a sunscreen mist. That said, I find using this mist is more hygienic and convenient than sunscreen application with sunscreen sticks or sunscreen lotions.
