Dior Beauty Prestige Skincare Review

“After women, flowers are the most lovely thing God has given the world.”- Christian Dior

Christian Dior had a profound love for flowers; and it was shown in his designs, home and fragrances. Flowers, in particular roses, were quintessential elements in his works; and it was said that his mother’s rose garden in Granville, Normandy cultivated his love for flowers.

Dior’s tribute to flowers has been celebrated many times over; and it is only fitting that Dior Beauty is paying homage to Monsieur Dior’s legacy with rose-based peptides in Dior Prestige hero products. Dior Prestige is Dior’s most luxurious skincare line which exclusively contains extracts from Rose de Granville. Since its creation in 1999, the Dior Beauty line has become one of the most coveted skincare ranges in the luxury beauty industry.

THE SCIENCE OF ROSES IN SKINCARE

Roses, particularly species like Rosa damascena (Damask rose), Rosa centifolia (Cabbage rose), and Rosa canina (Dog rose), are popularly used in skincare. Roses are a source of bioactive compounds such as antioxidants and essential lipids, which confer soothing, hydrating, and antioxidant properties in skincare.

Common extracts from rose plants include:
• Rose essential oil: This is the oil extracted from the rose petals. Rose essential oils contain flavonoids and tannins that scavenge free radicals and have mild antibacterial benefits in cell studies. Rose essential oil is also often used in aromatherapy and fragrances.
• Rose water: Rose water is the water that remains after the essential oil has been extracted from rose petals. Although rose water is commonly used in calming and hydrating toners and moisturisers, published data on rose water alone is very limited.
• Rosehip oil and extracts: Rosehips are the fruits of rose; and rosehip oil is extracted from the seeds of the rosehip. Rosehip oil differs from rose essential oil in its composition. Rosehip oil contains high amounts of essential fatty acids that maintain the skin barrier; provitamin A (retinoic acid precursor) and vitamin C; hence its popularity in anti-aging and hyperpigmentation skincare.

DIOR PRESTIGE & ROSE DE GRANVILLE

At the heart of Dior Prestige’s line is the Rose de Granville, a special rose breed developed by Dior Beauty for their cosmetics range. According to Dior Beauty, the Rose de Granville is more resilient and antioxidant-rich than traditional roses used for cosmeceuticals. Dior Prestige uses rose sap, rose oil and rose extract fractions in its formulations for skin regeneration, barrier restoration, and anti-aging.

From the Granville Rose, Dior Beauty has patented these technologies and extracts, including:
Rosapeptide™: According to Dior Beauty, this complex contains polyphenols, phytosterols, amino acids and oligosaccharides. This complex is said to facilitate skin cell communication, boost collagen and elastin levels in the skin, and improve skin resilience.
• Nutri-Rosapeptide: An enhanced version of Rosapeptide™, said to be more concentrated in micro-nutrients and enriched with skin barrier repairing omega-3 and omega-6 lipids.
• Midnight Rosapeptide: Extract from Rose de Granville harvested at night;and infused with Madecassic Acid (a compound also found in Centella Asiatica). Midnight Rosapeptide is said to support the skin’s physiological repair processes during sleep.
• Integral Rosapeptide™: A newer development from Dior Beauty that combines the original Rosapeptide™ complex with various extracts from the Rose de Granville. Integral Rosapeptide™ is richer in micronutrients than the original Rosapeptide™ and aims to restore hydration and glow to the skin.

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE FOR Rosapeptide™ AND DIOR PRESTIGE SKIINCARE?

Rose essential oil and rosehip oil can benefit the skin in terms of antioxidant protection, calming and moisturising effects due to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and barrier strengthening components of these rose extracts. Some of these benefits have been demonstrated in in-vitro and small in-vivo studies and trials.

However, I was unable to locate peer reviewed dermatological studies published on Rose de Granville specifically, likely because it is a proprietary cultivar of Dior Prestige. Independent in-vivo clinical trials on the specific proprietary blends are usually not publicly available, as is the case for most proprietary technologies and innovations. However, clinical assessments by dermatologists (as cited by Dior) on users indicate improvements in smoothness, firmness, and plumpness from using these ingredients.

Experience and finish of Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum:
At first glance, Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum captivated me with its coral pink serum and suspended micropearls in its opulent gold packaging. To say that Dior Beauty understands the art of sophisticated user experiences and refined aesthetics would be an understatement with Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum.

With gentle pressure, the micro-pearls disperses into a silky smooth serum to release its micronutrients. Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum spreads easily on my skin to leave a lightweight feel and smooth finish. Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum also has a delicate, elegant rose scent that reminded me of Miss Dior Rose N’Roses! fragrance.

With Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum, my skin felt well moisturised and looked more luminous. I also tested this serum immediately after a chemical peel and found that the Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum calmed the redness and dryness I typically experience after chemical peels.

Experience and finish of Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit:

Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit is positioned as a night treatment that supports skin regeneration during our sleep. In line with Dior Prestige’s branding, the Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit exacts a luxurious, opulent impression with its weighty gold jar and accents.

Despite its name, Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit feels more like a dense cream with a buttery soft texture. It melted into my skin to form a smooth film with a good slip. Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit initially felt rich and nourishing without being too heavy or tacky. Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit was deeply moisturising for me; and my skin also felt slightly softer to touch. Similar to Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum, this cream has a soft, delicate rose fragrance that I found pleasant.

• Rosa canina fruit oil aka rosehip oil: contains linoleic acid, pro-vitamin A and antioxidants for skin repair and rejuvenation of dark spots.
• Tocopheryl acetate: Antioxidant.
• Adenosine, acetyl hexapeptide-8: Skin smoothening effects

Experience and finish of Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral

Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral is Dior Beauty newly launched ultra concentrated serum; and expectations are high for this new serum. As expected with Dior Prestige products, Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral is housed in a sleek gold accented glass bottle and is fragranced with Dior Prestige’s signature rose scent.

The serum has a slightly thick, creamy consistency but glides to leave a very lightweight feek satin smooth finish. Interestingly, Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral leaves a transient cooling feel that was refreshing, and not in the uncomfortable, tacky feel of menthol or alcohol laden cosmetics.

My skin felt plumper while using Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral. However, comparing this serum to Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum, I preferred the latter as this gave me brightness that I could not see with Dior Prestige Le Nectar Intégral.

VERDICT ON ROSES IN SKINCARE & DIOR PRESTIGE SKINCARE

Fans of rose skincare will not be disappointed with Dior Prestige’s line up. In my opinion, Dior Prestige excels in crafting a luxury, pampering sensorial experience which makes the skincare ritual genuinely enjoyable. In particular, I liked the elegant floral scent and the refined feel of Dior Prestige La Micro-Huile de Rose Advanced Serum and Dior Prestige Le Baume de Minuit on my skin.

It is inevitable that I will get asked about the efficacy of Dior Prestige’s skincare. I felt that my skin was more supple, moisturised and brighter with these Dior Prestige products. Rose derived ingredients lend some antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and hydration benefits to the skin. However, evidence for Rose de Granville and Dior Prestige skincare’s efficacy is lacking in published clinical trials in peer-reviewed journals, very likely due to the proprietary nature of these rose extracts.

If you have normal to dry skin; and prefer a luxurious experience, you would like Dior Prestige’s skincare for its elegant, smooth finishes and rich moisturising effects. However, if you have oily skin or want to focus on treating concerns like acne and hyperpigmentation, products with retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C will offer greater clinical evidence for these conditions.
