This month, we’ve seen a wave of eye patches hitting the market, and uncannily enough, within mere days of one another, three big beauty brands, Fenty Skin, Huda Beauty, and Glow Recipe, releasing similar looking hydrogel eye patch dispensers. While social media is abuzz with speculation about how this could have happened, the more relevant question for consumers is: do you actually need an eye patch, and how do you choose a formula that genuinely delivers? Let this doctor’s guide help you to decipher the science.
What are hydrogel eye patches and how do they work?
A hydrogel is a complex network of polymers designed to hold water and deliver active ingredients directly into the epidermis². When applied beneath the eyes, the patch maintains close contact with the skin, creating a moist micro-environment. The degree of occlusion i.e. how well the hydrogel mask or eye patch locks ingredients depends on the formulation and physical design of the patch²,³.

The Fenty, Huda Beauty and Glow Recipe eye patch reveals
This week, Fenty, Huda and Glow Recipe have teased or launched eye patches with a similar dispensing mechanism. With a twist of the container, a hydrogel mask is shaved off a hydrogel block¹. First to launch was Fenty Skin Dew N Plump Fresh Sliced Hydrogel Eye Patches, followed by Glow Recipe Exopeptide Caffeine Brightening and Depuffing Fresh Slices Eye Mask. Huda Beauty was next to tease with its Undereye Jelly Patches.
While this eye patch dispensing mechanism may seem novel, hydrogel eye patches have been available for years.

What are the benefits of eye patches?
Hydration and a temporarily refreshed appearance
One benefit of the masks and eye patches is temporary hydration, similar to occlusion therapy employed for eczema. Occlusion therapy involves sealing the skin with wet wraps to lock in moisture and deepen the absorption of topical medications.
Cooling and reduced puffiness
A physically cooling gel can absolutely constrict blood vessels and reduce temporary morning puffiness. That’s the premise of cooling in recovery after aesthetic treatments like lasers and injectables.
How to choose an eye patch
Can eye patches treat dark circles, eye bags and wrinkles?
Dark eye circles are often due to a combination of anatomical, structural causes such hyperpigmentation, visible capillaries, shadows cast by under eye hollowness, or a combination of all three⁵.
Can an eye patch address any of the pathologies resulting in dark eye circles, eye bags or wrinkles? It is very unlikely that eye patches can achieve these, although eye patches and eye creams can play a supportive role in treatments for these conditions. Eye patch dispensers definitely make eye care more fun. Hydrogel eye patches, like face masks, work primarily by occlusion therapy to increase absorption of active ingredients and reduce transepidermal water loss. Hence, when it comes to choosing eye patches, be sure to match the active ingredients to your specific concerns!
